When Adam fell (falling from a spiritual union with God to now an earthly being) he became earthy (of the earth).Man, now in his fallen state, having now his intellect reigning instead of his spirit, (his spirit now lusting or desiring to do that which is forbidden James 4:5) puts his trust in the things of the world (man, medicine, ideas, government helps, etc.) which could never save a man's soul. It is temporary help which does not mend the root problem, which is sin. But, when a man says, "God save me, I have had enough", he totally abandons the world's help and trusts solely in his Saviour Jesus Christ even unto death. When Jesus talked about plucking out your own eye or cutting off your hand or foot in Matthew 18, he was not talking about actually performing that gruesome act. Instead, he was saying if someone in your assembly (i.e., congregation, church, etc.) causes someone who is small in number, size, or quantity (figuratively; dignity) to be offended in Him, you should cast that person out of your assembly; that the rest of you do not perish because of that ONE person. If Jesus was so grieved and hurt about one of His own doing that to a little one, you better take heed for your own salvation.
