When Adam fell (falling from a spiritual union with God to now an earthly being) he became earthy (of the earth).Man, now in his fallen state, having now his intellect reigning instead of his spirit, (his spirit now lusting or desiring to do that which is forbidden James 4:5) puts his trust in the things of the world (man, medicine, ideas, government helps, etc.) which could never save a man's soul. It is temporary help which does not mend the root problem, which is sin.
But, when a man says, "God save me, I have had enough", he totally abandons the world's help and trusts solely in his Saviour Jesus Christ even unto death. John 3:16
